Who's Been Doing Business as the L. Ron Hubbard Library?
.
First it was Norman F. Starkey.
.
Sherman Lenske filed a d.b.a. for Norman Starkey doing business as the "L. Ron Hubbard Library" on January 30, 1989. The filing says that Starkey had started doing business under that fictitious name on January 3, 1989. Yet the Library of Congress has Starkey listing himself "d.b.a. L. Ron Hubbard Library" as early as 4 August 1988.

The second filing: for Church of Spiritual Technology (CST) doing business as the "L. Ron Hubbard Library."
.
On 27 December 1993, at 21 minutes past 8:00, Sherman Lenske filed a second d.b.a. for the fictitious business name, "L. Ron Hubbard Library." Only this time it was so the Church of Spiritual Technology could start using that name. This actually overlapped Starkey's d.b.a., using the same fictitious name, which didn't expire till 30 January 1994.

.
Note that the Church of Spiritual Technology started doing business as "L. Ron Hubbard Library" on November 29, 1993. That just happens to be the same day on which Norman F. Starkey transferred the copyrights for 7,731 titles to--you guessed it--the Church of Spiritual Technology. (See "How CST Grabbed the Copyrights.")
.
In the Library of Congress records regarding that transaction, there is no mention of either party doing business as the "L. Ron Hubbard Library." According to records, Sherman Lenske, filer of both d.b.a.s, was the attorney for Norman Starkey, and was the sole incorporator and a Special Director for Church of Spiritual Technology.
