In a stunning legal development, officials of the Church of Spiritual Technology (CST), doing business as the "L. Ron Hubbard Library," have failed to answer the complaint that was served on them in a libel lawsuit that could be worth as much as $190 million.
.....The original suit, "Stephen Mitchell, et. al, plaintiffs, vs. David Miscavige, et. al, defendents/respondents," is extensively covered in our earlier story: "Will David Miscavige Look Good in a $190 Million Libel Suit?
.....But on the 20th of November, 1997, the plaintiffs served CST with the first amendment to their complaint, making CST a defendant in the action by converting one of the 99 "John/Jane Does."
.....CST never answered the bell. They offered no answer to the lawsuit in the time alloted to respond, and now a default has been entered against them (see Default Entry Document here). It should be noted that an ENTRY of default is different from a JUDGEMENT of default, and other legal remedies may be available to CST, depending on the outcome of pending court dates in the case. We will be following the story and will present updates as event warrant, and as documents become available to us.

WHY, WHY, OH WHY?

The ringing question is, "Why?" With so much to lose, there seems to be no clear explanation for CST's  failure to respond.
.....But before the default was entered, Veritas was already investigating CST and its fictitious alter-ego, the "L. Ron Hubbard Library." The story involves a complicated corporate structure (see "Secret Chart of Power"); the shuffling of copyrights (see "How CST Grabbed the Copyrights"); shadowy, mysterious, unidentified corporate officals (see "Scientology's Greatest Secret?"); strange records in the Library of Congress (see "A New Slant On Fraud?"); and--believe it or not--a hidden tie to the IRS (Surprise!).
